In 1965, a contest was held to help come up with a name for the new Miami team, some of the names suggested included Mariners, Marauders, Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, and Suns. The Miami Dolphins were founded in 1966 as the ninth member of the American Football League (AFL), four years before the league merged with the NFL. They became the only NFL team ever finish an entire season undefeated and the first franchise to make three consecutive Super Bowl appearances.

After 21 seasons at the now demolished Orange Bowl near downtown, Dolphins relocated north. In 1987, the Miami Dolphins played their first game at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Recent stadium updates include the installation of a canopy that will provide shade over 92-percent of the fans, as well as four giant, high-definition scoreboards at the top of each corner of the stadium.
